MY STORY
From Inspiration to Creation
Dimitar Nikolov is an artist, born 1978 and living in Varna city, Bulgaria.
From his very early age he is fascinated with the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. The World of Tolkien played major role in his decision to become a fantasy artist.
He studied Fine arts and History of art in The National School of Arts "Dobri Hristov"- Varna. The theme of his graduation artwork in 1996 was "The Battle of the Five Armies" inspired by the book of J.R.R. Tolkien. Later he graduated Spatial and Graphic Design at the University in his home city - Varna.
He has interests in Ancient and Medieval history, weapons and armors evolution during the ages. He search inspiration in the myths and the legends of the ancient days - these of the Celts, Vikings, Slavs, Huns and other barbaric tribes lived and fought in Medieval Europe.
He is also a True Metal Head. When he paints his fantastic creations it is always under influence of Metal music.
During all the years he mastered his classic painting skills - acrylic/oil technique on paper or canvas. He has strong understanding for human and animal anatomy, colors harmony, light and shadow and realistic depiction.
For most of his commercial projects he works digital painting, usually based on traditional pencil or ink sketches.
He specializes in fantasy art, horror and sci-fi illustrations, concept art and Metal cover arts. Since 2005 he works as a freelance artist with many fantasy/horror/sci-fi cover art and illustration projects completed during the years.
